WILDLIFE
(PROTECTION) ACT, 1972
WILDLIFE PROTECTION act was established on 9th
September, 1972. It states that:
1. Hunting and trade of the production
of useful animal wildlife should be regulated.
2. Huntind and trade in endangered
species should be banned.
3. National parks and santuries should
be established.
4. Appointments of wildlife
advisory board and wildlife warden should be made and their powers and
duties should be clearly listed.
5. Central zoo authority should be
constituted.
6. Captive breeding programme of
endangered programme should be started.
7. Steps to conserve many threatened
plant species like blue vanda,pitcher plant, ladies slipper orchid etc.
Indian wildlife (protection) act was amended in 1992 and now
provides legal measures for the protection of wildlife animals.
Under this act, several conservation projects have been
started for the specific endangered animals e.g
Lion project. Started in 1972.
Tiger project. Started on first april, 1973;
Crocodile project. In 1974;
Rhino conservation
project. Started
in 1987;
Elephant project.
DRAWBACKS OF WILDLIFE
ACT( 1972)
1.
Mild penality to offenders e.g upto 3 years imprisonment or fine of Rs.
25,000 or both.
2.
Personal ownership certificates for skin of tigers and leoperds. This
promote illegal hunting.
3.
Hunting and trade several endangered animals and species which are
prohibited in other states but are allowed in j&k( jammu and Kashmir)
4.
No coverage of foreign endangered wildlife.
5.
Litte emphasise on protection of gentic resource of plats.
6.
No provision for the protection of interest of local communities.
