This act was enacted on 23rd march
,1974 and is aimed to prevent and control water pollution. It states:
1. Maintenance and restoration of
quality of both surface and ground water.
2. Eastablishment of central and state
pollution boards.
3. To give powers to central and state
pollution board to advice,coordinate and provide technical assistance for
prevention and control of water pollution.
4. To allot funds to various pollution
boards and auditing their accounts.
5. To find out the recent methods for
the disposal of treated sewage and industrial effluents.
6. To finilize various penalities for
the defaulters polluting the natural source of water. These penalities has been
listed in article 24 of the act.
Water act
was amended in 1988 under which central pollution control board (CPCB) and state pollution
control board have been established.
FUNCTION OF CENTRAL POLLUTION CONTROL
BOARD(CPCB)
1. To
advice the central government about this issue related to the water pollution.
2. To
provide technical assistance to state pollution control boards and industries.
3. Lays
down standards for water quality parameters.
4. To
educate people through mass media.
5. To
setup laboratories to analyse the sample of water,domestic sewage and industrial
effluents.
FUNCTION
OF STATE POLLUTION CONTROL BOARDS
1.
to advice state government regarding
water pollution issues.
2.
To provide guidance and training to
persons.
3.
To organise programmes to control water
pollution.
4.
To find out the methods for the disposal
of domestic sewage and industrial effluents.
5.
Suggest efficient methods for
utilization ,treatment and disposal of various water pollutants.
6.
To collect and analyse the samples of
industries effuluents and may cancel the license after giving proper notice.
7.
Provide guidance to install effluent
treatment plant (ETP) in all polluting industries.
