ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT(EPA)1986

Environmental protection act was enacted on 23rd may, 1986 and was implemented on  19th of november ,1986 and is aimed to protect  and improve the quality of  environment by the central government with the coordination of the state governments.

FUNCTION OF THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT;
1.       To set the standards of quality of air ,water or soil and maximum permissible limits of concentration of various pollutants for different areas.
2.       To lay procedures and safe guards for handling of hazardious substances.
3.       To restrict the areas where industry, operations or processes shall not to be allowed.
4.       To lay the procedures and safeguard for the prevention of industrial accidents and to provide remedial measures.
5.       Under this act, central government has set up hazardious wastes( management and handling) rules since 1989.

FUNCTIONS OF THE STATE GOVERNMENTS;
1.       To advice the industries to treat their waste before they  release in the environment.
2.       To encourage the recycling of industrial wastes.
3.       To promote best technologiesto increase fuel efficiency and to reduce the generation of pollutants.
4.       To determine the assimilative capacity of water body receving  the industrial effluents.

Environmental protection act was amended in 1994 to include 29 environmental impact assessment of various development projects. These projects require clearance from central government.
